Carlo Ancelotti was full of praise for his side after they bounced back from midweek defeat to Liverpool with a well-deserved – albeit late-in-coming – victory at Cagliari.
“We responded brilliantly after Liverpool but I was sure we would because I saw it during the week,” the coach revealed after the game, when Arek Milik's 90th-minute free kick eventually broke the hosts' resilience. Losing at Anfield was a big blow but the lads have bounced straight back. I brought fresh legs into the starting line-up so that we would have more energy during the match. We earned the win by playing with intensity. We grew better as the game wore on and could have scored earlier. We're doing well this season. We've shown we can compete in Serie A and the Champions League and we want to do the same in the Europa League and the Coppa Italia. We still have a huge margin for improvement. If we keep going like this, we can get even better.”
The coach also spoke about the choice of Milik as free-kick taker: “I decided who would take it and I said so at the time. We have a pecking order: Arek and Mario Rui are the takers on the left and Mertens and Insigne on the right. I'm happy for Milik because he's a hard-working lad and an important member of the dressing room. He always trains professionally and remains very level-headed, both when things aren't going so well and when they are.”
Meanwhile at Monday's Europa League draw Napoli will learn who they must next face on the continent. “I've already said, we'll set out to win it. If we get a bit of luck and can overcome a few hurdles, we can have a say in it. We'll find out who our first opponents will be tomorrow and we'll have time to prepare for the game. I work on a daily basis with a club that has serious and clear plans which I share. We're all working with the same objectives in mind.”
