CONTE: “WE WANT TO HONOUR THE SCUDETTO AND GIVE IT OUR ALL”

After the 5-1 win against Sampdoria in the first match as Champions of Italy, the Nerazzurri return to the pitch to host Roma at the Meazza in a midweek match valid for the 36th matchday of the season. Ahead of the match, that will be played on Wednesday 12 May at 20:45 CEST, Antonio Conte spoke to the microphones of Inter TV.

The return fixture ended in a 2-2 draw, but it came after a very good team performance.

In Rome we played a very good game, there was some regret at the end when they clawed us back with a corner kick where we weren’t fully ready and in the right positions, and they were very crafty to take advantage. The team’s performance was excellent, against an excellent team like Roma.

Against Sampdoria, even at 5-1, you continued to spur on the players, a sign that this team always plays with maximum intensity.

The objective is to always look to do the best in every game, to be focused for the full 90 minutes plus injury time. I think that against Sampdoria the guys played very well, in fact, I congratulated them because I saw some beautiful plays from situations we have tried in training, and I’m happy that despite numerous changes, in the end we produced this result as well as an excellent performance. Credit must be given to these guys who have an undisputed sense of professionalism.

The Scudetto has already been won but significant milestones can still be achieved in the next games, are you inclined to take your foot off the accelerator?

Absolutely not, because it’s right to honour this championship victory in the best possible way, which therefore means trying to play all the games with great seriousness and professionalism. As I have already said, winning must be fixed in our minds, so even if there are three games left against important teams, we want to honour the Scudetto we have won and give our all on the pitch.

The numbers and statistics are proof of the improvement of several players as well as the team.

Whichever way you look at the numbers, they will always tell you something, an improvement or a non-improvement by a team. Our numbers are positive, especially in the second half of the season when we’ve done extremely well. We must continue until the end of this season trying to improve wherever we can. Last year, we finished with the best defence and the second-best attack and this year again we have the best defence and the second-best attack, so from here to the end we want to try to get the best out of the season from all points of view, including our statistics.

What are you expecting from Roma?

Roma are an excellent team, so we expect a team that wants to finish the season in the best possible way. After they face us they will have the derby, which is a very heartfelt game, so they will have no intention of giving up. They are an excellent team led by an excellent coach in Fonseca, so we’re expecting a good match. In my two seasons here we have only managed to draw with Roma, and this proves that it will be a tight match.
