Roma boss Rudi Garcia believes it’s imperative that his side do not underestimate Empoli when they visit the Stadio Olimpico tomorrow.
Speaking at his pre-match press conference, the French coach reiterated that he is targeting a win against the Tuscan outfit in order to build on successive victories over Carpi and Palermo.
Are you going to keep the playing system you used against Palermo or switch back to a 4-3-3 for the Empoli match?
“We can choose between one system or the other and there’s also a third option we know well. We have to be ready for the game and we mustn’t underestimate Empoli. They defeated Sassuolo when they were unbeaten and also got a draw against Napoli. There is quality in their collective play. Our objective tomorrow is to continue the winning streak we began with victories over Carpi and Palermo.”
The president sent out a message yesterday by talking about the Scudetto. Do you feel responsible to deliver?
“When I do something I do it to succeed, both in my professional and private lives. I wanted to win it all in my first year and I still want to win it all now. We’re always trying to improve across the board, and that includes results”.
Are your defensive problems down to tactics, your approach to the match or simply concentration?
“If we win every match from now until the end of the season 4-2 then I’d be fine with that. But we do need to improve our defensive solidity. We’ve conceded goals for a number of reasons, including individual and team errors. The most important thing is that we have a good group mentality – everybody needs to contribute and help out. That said, scoring is also important, so we need to strike the right balance between defense and attack.”
How is Edin Džeko?
“I have to say that Bosnia managed him very well. He wasn’t ready to play and he didn’t. He might have come on during the second game, but in the end he didn’t. Today he trained with the group for the whole session. He’s rediscovering his fitness and starting to play without fear again.”
Is Castan ready to return?
“It’s possible. The absence of Seydou Keita in midfield means we can’t play seven matches with Daniele De Rossi in central defense, even though he’s done well there. We need to get Castan and Toni Rüdiger back, not just tomorrow but for all of our upcoming matches. For both of them it’s just a case of rediscovering their match sharpness".
