Paulo Sousa has lauded his Fiorentina team after they defeated Inter 2-1 at the Stadio Artemio Franchi on Sunday night.
"This is a really valuable win," began Sousa after the final whistle. "I’m very proud of my players. They kept believing right until the end and managed to turn the game around. We played to our strengths this evening and were able to secure the win."
Sousa was also keen to praise his side’s development this season: "This group has really improved over the course of the campaign. The lads know what they’re capable of now. I think the squad has matured as a group and that’s down to all the hard work they’ve put in. Even though perhaps we’ve not always been consistent in our play, our fitness has been good throughout the season – our analysis shows that."
Focusing on the win over the Nerazzurri, Sousa said: "Inter are a great side with an impressive squad, but I don’t think they caused us many problems tonight. We deserved to win the game. I’m happy that Babacar got the winning goal. He’s had his chances from the start this season. Zarate is working hard to earn his spot and I’m sure he’ll be an important player for us."
Looking ahead to the midweek game against Tottenham, Sousa declared: "We’re happy to be in the Europa League. It’s a prestigious competition for the club and for the city."
Asked about the race for the top three, Sousa had a word of caution on one rival in particular: "Roma are capable of winning the Scudetto and they don’t deserve to be where they currently are. It will be a tough fight against all of the teams."
