&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Mehdi Taremi&lt;/strong&gt; promises to be the most important name in the short but unique history of Iranian footballers in Italy. The first Persian player to arrive on Italian soil was Ali &lt;strong&gt;Samereh&lt;/strong&gt;, who joined Gaucci’s Perugia in 2001. Compatriot Rahman &lt;strong&gt;Rezaei&lt;/strong&gt; then signed for the same club and became the first Iranian to score in Serie A. The defender remained in Italy for seven seasons, defending the colours of Perugia, Messina and Livorno. 15 years later, Roma signed Sardar &lt;strong&gt;Azmoun &lt;/strong&gt;on loan from Bayer Leverkusen, and he went on to score three goals in 23 top-flight appearances for the Giallorossi. Now, it’s the turn of Taremi, &lt;strong&gt;Iran’s&lt;/strong&gt; third-highest scorer of all time thanks to 50 goals in 85 appearances, including a brace against Engand at the World Cup in Qatar.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Born in Bushehr in 1992, Taremi took a big step when, aged 22, he moved to &lt;strong&gt;Persepolis&lt;/strong&gt;, a team based in the capital Tehran and the most decorated club in Iran. Mehdi enjoyed three prolific seasons at Persepolis, winning the league twice, topping the goalscoring charts twice and also getting his hands on an MVP award. In January 2018, he left his home country to join &lt;strong&gt;Qatari&lt;/strong&gt; side &lt;strong&gt;Al-Gharafa&lt;/strong&gt;, where he remained until the end of the following season.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;In the summer of 2019, the call from Europe arrived. Portuguese top-flight team &lt;strong&gt;Rio Ave&lt;/strong&gt; brought him on board, and, in his first season there, Taremi didn’t disappoint, finishing as the league’s top scorer. His extraordinary start to life in European football caught the attentions of the biggest clubs in Portugal, including &lt;strong&gt;Porto&lt;/strong&gt;, who signed him in 2020. Across four seasons with the Dragões, he scored &lt;strong&gt;91 goals in 182 appearances&lt;/strong&gt; in all competitions - an average of a goal every two games - and also provided &lt;strong&gt;56 assists&lt;/strong&gt;.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Over the course of five years in Portugal, Taremi won the &lt;strong&gt;league once&lt;/strong&gt; and also finished as the &lt;strong&gt;top scorer &lt;/strong&gt;on two occasions: in 2019/20 with 18 (level with Carlos Vinícius and Pizzi) and in 2022/23 with 22. In his final season in Liga Portugal, the Iranian striker contributed with six goals and four assists.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Taremi was involved in four consecutive &lt;strong&gt;Champions League&lt;/strong&gt; campaigns with Porto, scoring &lt;strong&gt;ten goals&lt;/strong&gt; (five in the 2022/23 season) and providing &lt;strong&gt;six assists&lt;/strong&gt; in total. During these years, the future Inter man faced three Italian clubs. In his first-ever season in Europe’s elite competition, Mehdi opened the scoring after just one minute in Porto’s first-leg round of 16 clash against &lt;strong&gt;Juventus&lt;/strong&gt;, taking full advantage of a mistake by Bentancur. He was also in the heart of the action in the return fixture: in the first half, he hit the bar with a header and then won the penalty that was converted by Sergio Olivera, while he was then sent off after the restart for a second bookable offence.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;In the next round of that edition of the tournament, Taremi scored a second-leg stunner against &lt;strong&gt;Chelsea&lt;/strong&gt;. The Dragões managed to overcome the Biancocelesti, with the Iranian equalising with a &lt;strong&gt;penalty&lt;/strong&gt; during the second leg at the Olimpico.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;In the 2022/23 Champions League, Porto met an Italian team for the third consecutive season, but the outcome wasn’t the same: Taremi played both matches in the Portuguese side’s round of 16 tie against Simone Inzaghi’s &lt;strong&gt;Inter&lt;/strong&gt; but failed to make a decisive impact.
