&lt;p&gt;It was the 2013/14 season. Serie A ended with the third Scudetto of Antonio Conte’s era at Juventus. They were the record-breaking squad with 102 points and a 17 point gap from Rafa Benítez’s Napoli in second place. Tévez on 17 goals and Llorente on 16 were the Bianconeri’s top goalscorers, similar numbers to the Napoletan duo of Higuaín (17) and Callejón (15). All four of them, however, were behind two Italian players, who were battling for the golden boot right until the final game of the season. The top goalscorer was in fact &lt;strong&gt;Ciro Immoblie at Torino &lt;/strong&gt;with 22 goals, just ahead of &lt;strong&gt;Lucatoni on 20 for Venezia&lt;/strong&gt;, who finished the campaign in tenth place.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Since then, Italian forwards have been the league’s top scorer, but there hasn’t been a first and second Italian duo since Immobile and Lucatoni. Until eleven years later when we now see an all-Italian striking force at the top of the scorers list: first there is Retegui and then there’s Moise Kean. His sister Micaela followed in her father’s footsteps and took a bronze medal home with her from Tokyo 2020. Mateo’s destiny was different, and despite playing his family’s sport for a certain period, at 16 years old, he decided to focus on football. He was first in the &lt;strong&gt;River Plate youth sector&lt;/strong&gt;, before making his senior debut with Boca Juniors, Estudiantes and Talleres, to gain some experience before taking centre stage at Club Atlético Tigre. &lt;strong&gt;Roberto Mancini’s call &lt;/strong&gt;changed his life: he has Italian roots from his grandad (of Sicilian origins), therefore opening an opportunity to play for Italy. In Summer 2023, he made the jump to Serie A, and to Gilardino’s Genoa: the first change was certainly the level, and despite a few injuries, the season ended positively in terms of goal scoring. Retegui then changed allegiances in moving to Bergamo where he himself reached a new level: in no time at all, he won over Gasperini, scoring goals for fun and making himself a key part of Atalanta’s project.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;GETTING USED TO EVERYTHING AT GENOA WITH GILARDINO, BEFORE TAKING CENTRE STAGE AT ATALANTA&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Retegui is one of those attackers who makes the most of every part of their journey. His time at Tigre and his 2022 golden boot award in the Argentine league are symbols of his desire for improvement, resilience and hard work. The current Atalanta forward has had to give everything to excel: the years of experience in the Primera División moulded him. Serie A is one of the most similar leagues to the Argentinian top-flight in terms of rhythm and physicality, and he certainly embraced it all. Gasp’s Atalanta began producing an exceptional standard and Retegui’s drive for scoring was at the centre of it all. &lt;strong&gt;He scored ten goals in his first nine Serie A games&lt;/strong&gt;, also getting his first hattrick in Italy, against his ex-side, Genoa. His maturity can be seen in his ability to get in behind at the right time in all different situations: his teammates move around, they dictate the play, and then he bursts to life just in time to get the attack going and often rounding off the move and finding the back of the net. Juventus then scouted his talent and, just a few seasons later brought him in, and even in his first experiences as a Bianconero, people were talking about his talent. &lt;strong&gt;His 24 goals in the Under-17s league in the 2015/16 season&lt;/strong&gt; were steps towards his professional career. From a very young age, he set records in the public eye, one of which was becoming the first 2000-born player to score a goal in Serie A. There were no doubts: his future was in his hands.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;However, something didn’t quite go as planned. On loan to Hellas Verona, he had a few good signs, but Kean didn’t really have his moment. &lt;strong&gt;When he returned to Juventus in 2018/19&lt;/strong&gt;, you could notice an improvement in terms of his performances and consistency: the player, who was still very young, contributed meaningfully to their Scudetto win, ending the year on seven goals in all competitions. He then left Turin to pursue experiences abroad: in the Premier League with Everton, he didn’t start often, &lt;strong&gt;but for PSG in Ligue 1&lt;/strong&gt;, he got going and scored 17 goals in the 2020/21 season. The next Summer, he became a Bianconero once again: Kean then went three years as a valuable asset, but never as a certain starter. For many years people had questioned Moise Kean, and while some had doubts, others had faith. It was indeed this faith that manifested itself: 17 goals in the league is impressive, added to four in the Conference League and one in the Coppa Italia puts him on 22 for the season. The numbers don’t lie, but often they don’t tell the full picture. This season, Kean has scored in many different ways and repaid Raffaele Palladino’s belief, giving Moise 100% responsibility of La Viola’s attack without any turning back or second thoughts.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;The ex-Juve striker certainly lived up to expectations: punishing high and inattentive defences and dictating the tempo in open play. He is also a clinical header of the ball, and a shining reference point for Fiorentina`s midfield to play off of. He`s been decisive countless times this season, including &lt;a href=&#34;https://www.legaseriea.it/en/media/serie-a/fiorentina-1-0-atalanta-14658mc2bkdia4&#34;&gt;scoring in the match against Retegui`s Atalanta on Matchday 30&lt;/a&gt;. The Atalanta striker has scored six goals in 18 appearances for Italy, while La Viola’s main man has seven goals in 21 caps, taking over Retegui with his (bitter) brace in the Nations League quarter-final defeat against Germany. In the last international break, Luciano Spaletti had to abandon the option of playing with two centre-forwards, and instead, he opted for bringing Kean on for Lucca in the previously mentioned game against Germany. Retegui was out because of an injury, but he will be very useful in Italy’s upcoming games in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;At the moment, there is competition, but considering their form, we cannot rule out that the Italy coach could change his set up. Both from the first whistle, or throughout the course of the game, a shift towards a more physical attack could be a positive change in the national team`s development. Seeing them on the pitch together isn`t a dream, but a real possibility of a barrage of goals. In the meantime, we`re enjoying the open race for the Serie A top scorer title.
